Tobey Goldfarb, JD, LLM, Founder & Principal Consultant

Tobey has been helping nonprofits grow for more than a decade. An attorney by training, Tobey has always been drawn to social justice work. Today, she uses her powers for good, helping nonprofits develop their organizational culture, programs, and stories and sharing those stories in ways that advance the mission, raise funds, and amplify impact. 

Tobey has worked with local, national, and international organizations to build capacity, expand programming, raise more money, and win major awards. She is also currently an instructor in the WVDO Professional Certificate in Nonprofit Fundraising, and serves on the WVDO board of directors. 

Tobey has an LL.M. from American University's Washington College of Law, a J.D. from California Western School of Law, and a B.A. from the College of Wooster. She is a trained Community Mediator and Domestic Violence Advocate, and a member of the State Bar of California. Tobey lives in Portland, Oregon. When not working, she enjoys cooking, crafting, and being walked by her two rescue dogs, Hazel and Roxy.


Margarett Waterbury, Consulting Associate

Margarett Waterbury is a writer, editor, and communications consultant with a background in business, marketing, and journalism. She has helped hundreds of businesses and organizations around the world raise millions of dollars in funding and financing. 

Margarett began her career as an advocate for domestic violence survivors, an experience that helps her understand the realities of day-to-day nonprofit operations. She celebrates the critical role of the nonprofit sector in creating and sustaining a safer, more equitable, and more humane community.

When she’s not helping nonprofits grow at A to Be Partners, Margarett provides a wide range of communications services for businesses and nonprofits, and also writes for local and national publications about food, drink, travel, and agriculture. She holds a B.A. in Linguistics from Reed College and lives in Portland, Oregon.



Doris Brook, JD, Consulting Associate

Doris comes to the realm of nonprofit development as a second career after having been a plaintiff’s attorney, a community volunteer, and the mother of two Oregonian boys. Motivated always by a desire to do good in the world and work for social change, as a grant writer she draws from a deep well of experience that emphasizes research, writing, analysis, and advocacy skills, along with the love of telling a good story.  She is particularly skilled at deep prospect research, and can work magic with search engines.

Doris is a proud member of the first cohort in the PSU/WVDO Professional Certificate in Nonprofit Fundraising program, which provided her with a thorough, strategic understanding of the full scope of nonprofit fundraising from a donor-centered perspective, grounded in best practices and measurable outcomes.

Doris has a J.D., magna cum laude, from Lewis & Clark Law School; and a B.A. in Language & Culture from Purchase College, State University of New York.


Katie Kervin, Consulting Associate

Katie Kervin is a writer, editor, and marketing / communications consultant. She believes that great content and messaging comes from combining strong writing with efficient editing and strategic thinking. With more than a decade of experience, Katie brings a passion for storytelling and a keen editorial eye. Having worked both for magazines and in marketing and PR, she is skilled in helping her clients discover and craft their stories. She truly enjoys honing unique and special messaging for every client and is inspired to use her skills to help nonprofits maximize their impact. When not working with A to Be Partner’s clients, Katie provides writing and communications services to businesses and publications, with a special focus on the architecture, design, and hospitality industries. She holds a B.A. in English and a master’s degree in writing and book publishing from Portland State University. A Northwest native, her curious spirit has led her to live in numerous U.S. cities, though she now calls Portland, Oregon home.



Jamie Melton, Operations Consultant

A social entrepreneur, Jamie's background spans the intersection of non-profit and small business development. She works with local and international organizations to plan and implement creative operational, marketing and development strategies. 

In her early career, Jamie worked to develop equitable trading practices to increase income for micro-coffee growers in Colombia. She returned to Oregon, her home state, with a commitment to build assets for immigrant entrepreneurs. Her work on the celebrated cultural business incubator, Portland Mercado,  successfully helped launch and grow over 100 new businesses.

Jamie covers the back end operations for A to Be Partners. When not hanging out on Asana or Google Drive, Jamie works on a variety of creative projects under her business, Grid Notes.  She has a degree in Anthropology from the University of Oregon. She lives and plays in North Portland, with frequent trips to nature.
